Tips to Reducing Heating Costs in the Winter

by | Dec 24, 2013 | Heating and Air Conditioning

Winter heating costs can easily get out of control. People often look for ways to reduce their bills, but don’t know what methods are more effective than others. If you’re looking to cut down on your winter heating costs, there are a few things you can do to get started. Here are some tips that are easy to implement and get started with right away.

Insulate Your Home

Adding insulation to your home is not a hard job. You can do this as a weekend project, or hire someone to do this for you in a couple of hours. Start with your attic areas, as you want to make sure that too much heat does not escape in the winter. Whether you’re using hybrid heating systems, or a traditional furnace, it won’t do any good for the heat to escape your home. You can also cover your windows with plastic if you notice a breeze in the area.

Use Space Heaters

Use space heaters to warm the areas that you use the most. This way, you can turn down the furnace, and not worry about heating the areas that you aren’t using. Place them in the center of the rooms, and close off those rooms to keep the heat in. Be sure to check the size of your space to make sure that the heater is sufficient for the area, and always follow the instructions for use.

Program Your Thermostat

Program your thermostat before you leave the home. You can incorporate this practice, in addition to using hybrid heating systems to cut your bill even further. Program the thermostat for minimal heat while you’re away, and set it for higher heating temperatures when you’re in the home. You could also invest in an electric blanket to use at night time. This should keep you warm enough to allow you to be able to turn the heat down overnight.

There are several things you can do to keep your heating costs low in the winter. In addition to these tips, check with your energy company for other ways to save money. Many times these tips are mailed to customers with the monthly bill, but you can also check their website for this information. Space heaters, insulation, and programming your thermostat are all great ways to get started, whether you’re using hybrid heating systems or another form of energy.
